| If
a diver suffers the effects of decompression illness (DCI), it is
essential that they are treated in a recompression chamber without delay
- to recompress the bubbles of nitrogen which have formed in the
bloodstream. Every diver ought to familiarise themselves with the
operation of a recompression chamber, just in case they are unfortunate
enough to suffer DCI.
The Diver Training College
near York offers a course to enable both divers and non-divers to
experience being in the chamber at a simulated depth of 50 metres (6 bar
absolute or 5 bar gauge pressure). You will naturally be exposed to the
effects of nitrogen narcosis and have great fun listening to how your
voice changes to sound like a character from Walt Disney.
You can also dive in a 7
metre pool wearing the standard navy dress diving equipment - with lead
boots and copper helmet with surface fed air supply.
